Rising Ethiopian-American singer and songwriter Berhana has released a new song, “Break Bread.” It was co-produced by Michaël Brun, Danny McKinnon, Baird, and Gabe Acheson.
On the meticulously arranged and produced track, a hesitant Berhana takes another chance at getting to know a woman despite past disappointments. He praises his date for her patience as he reacquaints himself with the dating scene. He shows that one cannot know what’s out there until they try.
“You know I don’t break bread with just anybody / You so hard to please, so am I / Kudos for your patience, I can’t fake sh*t / Let’s see if stars align,” he sings in the chorus.
Discussing the new track, Berhana says, “It’s about finding someone I’m really into after taking a bunch of L’s, while at the same time having to remind myself to slow down. The song moves between infatuation and caution until the bridge, where I finally let go.”
As noted, “Break Bread” is the third offering from Berhana’s upcoming sophomore album, Amén: የዘላን ህልም, which stands for Amén: A Nomad’s Dream. It arrives Oct. 20 via EQT Recordings.
Previous singles include “Gone (Abebe Bikila)” and “Like a Habit.” Each were supported with accompanying music videos.
Berhana is promoting his forthcoming album Amén: የዘላን ህልም globally through screenings of The Nomad’s Dream, a short film featuring music from the album.
It also “explores themes of identity, including what it means to be a first-generation American and the strength of ties to ancestral lands,” according to the press materials.
Amén: የዘላን ህልም is the follow-up to Berhana’s 2019 debut album, Han, also released on EQT Recordings. The 14-track album, with Canadian producer Pomo on board, features the previously released tracks “G2g” and “Health Food.”
Remixes of certain album tracks were released, including a “Golden” version featuring Mereba and an Amazon Music exclusive of “I Been” with Boogie.
