Kenyon Dixon isn’t just an R&B singer and songwriter; he advocates for the genre. Fans who follow him on X (formerly known as Twitter) are familiar with his tendency to share his take on what’s happening in R&B, while amplifying other rising acts who are also helping move the genre forward.
“I always wanted my platform to promote the type of R&B that I do, that I know people love. I try to put my fans onto other R&B singers who I feel are making that kind of music,” Dixon told Rated R&B in a 2022 interview.
The Grammy-nominated singer has returned with his new album, The R&B You Love. It includes the previously shared songs “Slow Dancing” featuring Kincy, “Lucky” and “‘98 Vibes (Do You Right)” featuring Tiffany Gouché.
The 17-track album is like a love letter to the genre, dotted by velvety tunes that navigate the ups and downs of love. The opening track, “In Your Head,” picks up where Dixon left off on “Closer,” the title track to his 2022 album. Here, Dixon sings about taking a chance on love. “It’s all your head / If we never tried / We will never know,” he croons.
Songs like “Good Love” and the Alex Isley-assisted “& Then Some” are a nod to bedroom slow jams. Meanwhile, “Slow Dancing” brings that same intimate groove to the dancefloor.
Legendary R&B singer and songwriter RL of Next is featured on “2000s R&B,” a lovelorn track that finds them singing in the rain with a broken heart from a failed relationship.
Regarding The R&B You Love, Dixon tells Rated R&B, “I’ve been on a mission to make people demand and expect more from modern R&B. It’s such a sacred genre and deserves the best representation all around; from the studio to your speakers to the stage. I hope this album makes you fall back in love with R&B. Cheers to The R&B You Love.”
As noted above, The R&B You Love is the follow-up to Dixon’s 2022 album, Closer. It was ranked No. 9 on Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2022 list.
“Closer delivers a direct aural experience that’ll invigorate any true R&B fan. If Dixon makes you fall back in love with music, then he has completed a job well done,” wrote Rated R&B’s Danielle Brissett.
