“Superman” marked Wilson’s 10th No. 1 hit on the Adult R&B Airplay chart, breaking his short-lived tie with Usher for the male artist with the most No. 1s.
“I am incredibly grateful and humbled by the overwhelming support for ‘Superman,’” Wilson stated previously. “To have another #1 hit on the Billboard Adult R&B chart is truly an important achievement to me, especially with a song so personal highlighting my wife’s endless love and support of me. She truly put the cape back on my back after very rough times.”
He concluded, “I want to thank my fans for their unwavering loyalty and love throughout my career. This song is also for all women, their strength, love and support is appreciated more than they know.”
As Wilson indicated above, “Superman” is about overcoming adversity in one’s life. “This song is truly personal for me as it reflects on the love I have for my wife and the turning point that reshaped my entire life,” explained Wilson.
“After The Gap Band’s success, I struggled with homelessness and addiction. I entered rehab, meeting my future wife, a counselor at the facility. She put the cape on my back and we’ve been rollin’ ever since (28 years). This song is also for all women, their strength, love and support is appreciated more than they know.”
“Superman” was released Dec. 8, 2023, via P Music Group. The song was produced by The Stereotypes, and includes a writing credit from Ant Clemons.
