As Ravyn Lenae prepares to release her new album, Bird’s Eye, the singer shares her latest single “One Wish” featuring Childish Gambino.
On the deeply personal track, produced by Dahi and FNZ, Lenae opens up about her complicated relationship with her father.
She sings about feeling disappointed in his absence during significant life events (“Called me on my birthday / I thought you’d be on your way”) and her struggle to extend grace (“I can’t forgive you / No matter how hard I try”).
Childish Gambino appears in the second verse, where he sings from a father’s perspective. “Tried to go out of my way / But couldn’t find the words to say / Left a message with your mama / Oh, she gave me drama / I hope that your one wish does come true / I miss you,” he croons.
In an open letter shared on social media, Lenae discussed the meaning behind “One Wish” and how it fits into the album’s theme.
“One of the most beautiful things about making Bird’s Eye was the amount of reflection that was required to truly tell a story that felt clear and honest. Digging into the nooks + crannies of my journey so far was so rewarding in many ways, but it’s most meaningful when it manifests into tangible change in my life,” said Lenae.
Lenae adds, “‘One Wish’ is one of the most important songs on the album [because] it highlights the complex relationship I’ve had with my Dad. The lyrics remember my 10th birthday and feeling upset that he couldn’t make it. It was important for me to address these built-up emotions in song in order for us to now be on a beautiful path of genuinely learning [about] each other and rekindling. Something valuable I’ve learned is being able to really humanize my loved ones and understand the context around people more deeply. I love you, Dad, and so happy we’re here.”

Ravyn Lenae’s latest track follows “Dream Girl” featuring Ty Dolla $ign,” “Love Me Not” and “Love Is Blind.”
Bird’s Eye will release Aug. 9 via Atlantic Records. Lenae’s second album will follow her debut album, Hypnos, which was ranked No. 3 on Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2022 list.
Hypnos included Lenae’s Steve Lacy-assisted single “Skin Tight,” plus features from Mereba, Smino, and Fousheé.
As for Childish Gambino, the multitalented entertainer released his final album, Bando Stone and The New World, on July 19 via RCA Records. The album includes collaborations with Chlöe, Jorja Smith, Amaarae, Flo Mill, Fousheé, and others.
