Tyrese has achieved his first No. 1 in nearly a decade on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart.
The singer/actor’s version of Skylark’s 1972 track, “Wildflower,” takes over the top spot after spending last week at No. 2. To that end, Tyrese’s faithful rendition holds off Chris Brown’s “Sensational” from capturing its ninth week at the summit.
“Wildflower” is Tyrese’s fourth chart-topper on the Adult R&B Airplay, following “Shame” from his 2015 album, Black Rose. The latter song, nominated for a Grammy the following year, ruled for 16 consecutive weeks and spent 49 weeks inside the top 10 overall.
Tyrese’s other two No. 1 Adult R&B singles are “Stay” and “How You Gonna Act Like That.” The former song, from his Open Invitation album, topped for 11 weeks.
Meanwhile, “How You Gonna Act Like That,” Tyrese’s first song to lead this airplay chart, reigned for four weeks in 2003. The classic track appears on his 2002 album, I Wanna Go There, also his third studio album.
Tyrese is the first solo male artist to lead the Adult R&B Airplay chart with a new song since Maxwell‘s cover of Al Green‘s “Simply Beautiful,” which headlined for two weeks. Noticeably, Tyrese and Maxwell are the only two artists with remakes as singles to reach No. 1 this year.
Elsewhere on Billboard, “Wildflower” moves to No. 14 this week on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. It’s Tyrese’s highest position on this chart since “Shame,” which peaked at No. 13 in July 2015.
Released Aug. 16, “Wildflower” is described as a tribute to Tyrese’s late mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson, who passed away in early 2022 due to complications from COVID-19. David Foster and Brandon “B.A.M.” Hodge co-produced the soulful tune.
“Wildflower” was issued two weeks ahead of Tyrese’s return album, Beautiful Pain, which came out Aug. 30 via his label Voltron Recordz in tandem with Create Music Group.
Two additional singles preceded Beautiful Pain, “Don’t Think You Ever Loved Me” and “Love Transaction,” each released in 2023 respectively.
October London, Tamar Braxton, El DeBarge, Lenny Kravitz, Le’Andria Johnson, Kenny G, and Eric Dawkins are among the album’s contributing features.
Tyrese is currently on the road with his TGT members, Tank and Ginuwine, co-headlining the R&B Forever Tour with Bell Biv DeVoe.
Per Ticketmaster, the North American leg had a few dates in select cities to be canceled, with some others still scheduled. R&B group Silk is slated to be a supporting guest for the remaining shows.
