Emerging R&B singer-songwriter TA Thomas has delivered his new EP, Southern Soul, via High Standardz/Def Jam Recordings.
The five-track offering, a love letter to the subgenre of the same name, includes the previously shared “Risky,” “Angry” and “Preach.” The latter song was co-written by Grammy-winning singer Lucky Daye.
“Southern soul is the combination of R&B, gospel, blues, maybe a little sprinkle of country, but it’s really just soul music,” the Mississippi native tells Rated R&B. “As I started to get older, I started understanding what Southern soul was. One of the things that’s so special about me is I sing with emotion [and] with soul.”
Regarding the project’s inspiration, he notes, “This Southern Soul EP is really me paying homage to home. I really want to paint an image of who TA is, where he from [and] the stuff that I grew up on.”
Among the project’s fresh tracks is “Devotion,” a dreamy ballad where TA flexes his falsetto vocals. “I wanna know, when you go to sleep at night / Am I the last thing on your mind? / I wanna know, I wanna know / First thing that I wonder when I wake up in the morning / Am I the first thing on your mind,” he croons in the chorus.
“Girl Of Mine” is a two-step-friendly groove where TA is completely enamored by his partner. “Words can’t explain what you do to me / The prayer I been praying has come around / All of a sudden, I think about / I love how you love me,” he sings.
Southern Soul is TA Thomas’ first project since signing with Def Jam. In 2022, he released his debut solo EP, Caught Between 2 Worlds, produced by Camper, with whom he collaborated again on Southern Soul.
Speaking on Caught Between 2 Worlds, TA told Rated R&B, “We’re coming to a moment in time where guys are becoming a lot more vulnerable. This project embodies the male perspective of being in and out of love.”
TA Thomas is currently supporting his labelmate Coco Jones on her Why Not More? Tour as a special guest.
