Sevyn Streeter has returned with “Assumptions,” her first solo single in two years.
The B.A.M.-produced track carries the DNA of a 2000s Neptunes production, with syncopated drum kicks paired with metallic synths.
Lyrically, the song expresses the desire for understanding in a complicated relationship instead of jumping to conclusions. “I’m not here to make assumptions bae / So I just get right straight to the point,” Streeter sings.
“Assumptions” is Streeter’s first music release as a lead act since 2023’s “Thank You.” Since then, she has collaborated with fellow singer-songwriters Eric Bellinger (“Drop”) and Elijah Blake (“Stuck In My Ways”).
Although she had been relatively quiet in terms of releasing music, Streeter has been busy behind the scenes working with several R&B artists. She co-wrote Normani’s “Distance” from her debut solo album, Dopamine, and wrote “AAA” from FLO’s debut album, Access All Areas, as well as “Caught Up.”
Most recently, Streeter sang background vocals on Givēon’s “Strangers” and “Don’t Leave” from his sophomore album, BELOVED.

Further, Streeter stars in Netflix’s new docu-reality series Hitmakers, which premiered in July. The six-episode show follows a dozen acclaimed songwriters and producers tasked with creating demos at songwriting camps that will be pitched to major artists like Usher and John Legend.
In a recent interview with Blavity, Streeter confirmed more new music on the way and explained how songwriting is a pillar in her artistry. “I love being a solo artist. I got a project that’s on the way [that] I’m very excited about. But at the same time, I say that my artistry for me, not for everyone, but my artistry, I don’t think it would exist in the same way if I were not a songwriter,” she said.
Streeter’s upcoming project will follow 2022’s Drunken Wordz Sober Thoughtz (Deluxe Edition). The standard version of the album, released in September 2021, included her Chris Brown-assisted “Guilty,” plus collaborations with Lucky Daye, Jeremih, Bia and more.
