After much anticipation, Grammy-nominated artist Jessie Reyez has released her debut album Before Love Came to Kill Us via FMLY/Island Records.
The 14-track offering includes the previously shared songs “Imported” featuring 6LACK, “Love in the Dark,” “Ankles” and her breakout hit “Figures,” which was originally released in 2016. The album also features a guest appearance from rapper Eminem. She collaborated with Eminem on his 2018 LP, Kamikaze.
Speaking on the album, Reyez told L’Officiel, “It has a lot to do with life and death, but I replaced life with love, so it’s the beautiful side of death and the sad side of love.”
Earlier this month, Reyez said she was conflicted about releasing the album during the COVID-19 pandemic; her tour dates were postponed due to the outbreak.
“The whole premise of building this album was to make something that made people think about their mortality. Now it seems like a theme song to what’s happening [in real life],” she wrote on Instagram.
She continued, “I’ve reached out for advice; the general consensus is ‘drop it.’ I put everything into this, I even pulled it down from the pre-order to make changes because I needed to make sure I was passionate and proud of it – not the label, not my managers- me. So I did. If we drop now and the world ends tomorrow, at least my art was authentic.”
