R&B heavyweight Monica, who is preparing to celebrate her music legacy, and sisterhood with Brandy on tonight’s anticipated Verzuz episode, has released a new track “Trenches” featuring Lil Baby.
The rap phenom starts The Neptunes-produced track with a verse about him and his ride-or-die chick against the cold world. Monica knows that her man has a loyalty to the street, but promises to hold him down by laying low to steer him away from those who may not mean him any good. Despite his unsuspecting eyes to the harm that comes with his lifestyle, she wants him to listen to her sincere advice.
“Trenches” follows Monica’s previously-released singles “Me + You” and “Commitment.” The latter ballad peaked at the number one spot on the Billboard Adult R&B Airplay chart last summer. All three songs are slated to appear on her forthcoming album, tentatively titled Chapter 38.
Monica has been cooking up this album for a few years, hitting the studio with the likes of Tank, PJ Morton, Polow Da Don, and NOVA Wav.
In July, Monica celebrated the 25th anniversary of her debut album Miss Thang. Revisit the album with our in-depth revisit. Her 2010 comeback album Still Standing celebrated its 10th anniversary in March. We honored the album with an editorial. Read it here.
