In partnership with Amazon Music, Sinéad Harnett takes on The Isley Brothers’ 1976 classic “At Your Best (You Are Love).” The late global superstar Aaliyah later reimagined the song for her 1994 debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number.
Harnett’s unplugged remake of “At Your Best” proves that she is a student of Aaliyah’s early rendition. Backed by acoustic strums, the British singer’s airy voice here is clear, gentle, and sweet enough to make the coldest person warm inside.
Harnett penned a heartfelt note to Aaliyah on her social media following the release of her cover. “From the moment I heard your music playing through my older sister’s speakers as a little girl I was absolutely captivated,” she wrote. “I believed every word you were singing. So tender, so effortless and so angelic. Damn did you teach me a thing or two about RnB. About soul!”
She continues, “Every day since, your music still sounds as fresh; as new; and I still melt over those every ad-lib. Something about your ‘At Your Best (You Are Love)’ cover gets me everytime, and when I sing it I get take somewhere else. We miss you queen.”
“At Your Best (You Are Love)” comes on the heels of Harnett’s amazing 2020, which consisted of consistent releases. Most recently, she released a communal-styled music video for her EARTHGANG-featured track “Take Me Away.” It follows her “Stickin” collaboration with VanJess and Masego.
The latter two songs are set to appear on Harnett’s upcoming album. The follow up to last year’s Lessons in Love is promised to arrive sometime later this year.
