The question of whether acclaimed singer-songwriter Ant Clemons could put out another solid project is made unimportant with the release of 4Play. The EP arrives nearly three years after his Grammy-nominated debut project, Happy 2 Be Here.
4Play is a four-track project that features a contribution from Ari Lennox. The midtempo opener, “Six and Stones,” where Clemons sings about smoking substances. “Head Over Heels” has a smooth classic R&B approach, with Clemons’ vocals being pitched down for most of the song.
He closes the project with “Come With Me,” where he sings about locking down the person he’s seeing and promising to fulfill their sexual appetite. Lennox’s background vocals and ad-libs on the song are exceptional, helping perfectly wrap the EP.
Each track on 4Play is self-written. Production credits include Eric Hudson, James Fauntleroy, MyGuyMars, Rex Kudo and more.
4Play is an appetizer to Clemons’ full-length album scheduled to come out sometime this spring.
Clemons had a busy year last year touring, co-writing music for other artists, and releasing new music of his own. He began 2021 with the reissue of his debut EP Happy 2 Be Here. Then he dropped the songs “Appreciation” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz, “Section” featuring Kehlani, and “Story of My Life.”
Clemons also covered Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” and appeared on Charlie Heat’s latest album Valentine’s Son.
