MTV has announced a few more nominations for its 2022 Video Music Awards. Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Steve Lacy and Khalid go head-to-head for Song of the Summer. The social media-driven award honors the most-talked record of the hot months.
Beyoncé’s newly gold-certified single “Break My Soul” picks up a nod, marking her second in this category. She previously earned a nomination in 2020 for her Grammy-winning “Savage (Remix)” with Megan Thee Stallion. “Break My Soul” appears on Beyoncé’s hit album Renaissance.
Khalid returns to the field with “Numb,” a collaboration with electronic producer and DJ Marshmello. It marks his second nomination, following 2019’s recognition for “Talk,” lifted from his sophomore album Free Spirit. Khalid is also performing at this year’s show.
Carey and Lacy are first-time nominees. The latter superstar, currently experiencing breakout solo success, is nominated for “Bad Habit.” The smash single appears on his sophomore album Gemini Rights. At the time of this publishing, “Bad Habit” stands at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first top ten single of his career.
As for Carey, the music icon’s memorable cameo on Latto’s “Big Energy (Remix)” featuring DJ Khaled puts her in stiff competition. Carey shocked this year’s BET Awards audience when she showed up to perform the hot remix alongside the rising rapper.
In addition to the Song of the Summer nominations, those for Group of the Year also were revealed. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, known together as Silk Sonic, make the list, in part to their successful singles lifted from their debut album, An Evening With Silk Sonic.
Fan voting for Group of the Year starts on Monday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. EST via MTV‘s Instagram Stories. It concludes Thursday, Aug. 25. That same day is when fan voting begins for Song of the Summer. It runs at the same time and same way, but until Saturday, Aug. 27.
This year, The Weeknd scored five Video Music Awards nominations, the most among R&B acts. Normani follows with three. The 2022 MTV VMAs airs live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Sunday, Aug. 28.
