Jazmine Sullivan delivered a rousing rendition of the national anthem at the MLB World Series Game 5 between the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies.
“Honored to perform for my city,” Sullivan wrote in an Instagram post.
The two-time Grammy winner’s stunning performance follows the release of her new original song “Stand Up.” Co-written and produced by Oscar and Grammy-winning songwriter/producer D’Mile, the poignant tune is taken from the Chinonye Chukwu-directed film Till, available in theaters everywhere.
“I’m honored to be able to contribute to such a powerful film about such a historic and tragic moment in American history,” said Sullivan.
Chukwu added, “A passionate artist and activist, Jazmine delivers an anthem for justice and hope; one that ignites a fire to rise up for all people whose lives have been senselessly cut short because of America’s deep-rooted and white supremacy.”
“Stand Up” follows Sullivan’s previous film contribution, “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” The heart-rending remake was for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic, Elvis, which came out in June. D’Mile also produced it.
Last month, Sullivan’s recent single “Hurt Me So Good” entered the top ten on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart, making it her sixth overall.
As of today, the soaring ballad has peaked at No. 5. It appears on the deluxe edition of her Grammy-winning album Heaux Tales.
The updated LP was released in February, two months before Sullivan collected her first career Grammy wins. In addition to taking home Best R&B Album, she also won Best R&B Performance for “Pick Up My Feelings.”
The platinum-selling kiss-off shot to No. 1 on the R&B charts, marking her first chart-topper on R&B radio and the Adult R&B Airplay list.
As for Heaux Tales, the album was certified gold by the RIAA, with over 500,000 equivalent units sold, in September.
Earlier this fall, Sullivan teamed up with John Legend for the song “Love,” taken from his new album LEGEND.
She joined forces with Emmy-winning music director and producer Adam Blackstone to remake Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight.”
In other news, Sullivan is nominated for two awards at the 2022 Soul Train Awards, including Album of the Year (Heaux Tales, Mo’ Tales: The Deluxe) and Best R&B/Soul Female Artist.
