Daniel Caesar has returned with “Do You Like Me?” his first single since 2022’s “Please Do Not Lean.”
Anchored by a funky bassline, “Do You Like Me?” finds Caesar, caught in a love triangle, looking for clarity from a potential partner. He yearns for love but wants to ensure that the feelings are mutual.
He sings in the second verse: “I hate that I’m so jaded, it’s cool but overrated / I wanna be in love again / At first I was f**king your friend / But I wanted you / Are we wrong? I guess that depends.”
Commenting on his new single, Caesar says “Do You Like Me?” is “a song about a woman I respect deeply… 90 degrees of a love triangle.”
As noted above, “Do You Like Me” is the follow-up to “Please Do Not Lean,” his first release under his new deal with Republic Records. Both songs are expected to appear on his upcoming third album.
In an interview with Billboard, Caesar shared why he decided to partner with a major label. “I felt like I was becoming a label executive and an artist at the same time. I wanted to keep artistry and business separate with a major label as my partner,” he explained. “I did as much as I could on my own and I experienced a lot as an independent artist. I wanted to feel the difference of having such a large machine behind me.”
While Caesar only released one song as a lead artist in 2022, he still had an eventful year. He gained new certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), including for his debut album Freudian (certified platinum); his 2018 track “Who Hurt You?” (certified gold); and his Grammy-nominated duet with Brandy “Love Again” (certified gold).

Furthermore, Caesar collaborated with Omar Apollo (“Invincible“) and FKA twigs (“Careless“).
He even joined Justin Bieber on stage at Coachella to perform their hit single “Peaches” with Givēon. The song racked up four nominations at the 64th Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance and Best Music Video.
