Khalid has returned with “Softest Touch,” his first solo song release of the year. He co-wrote the track, while Vaughn Oliver, Nico Stadi and Blake Straus co-produced it.
The plush artwork design for Khalid’s comeback track is less indicative of the seasons for which it’s intended to be heard.
Actually, if Khalid’s “Softest Touch” indicates the weather in the coming months, it will be blazing. It has a great radio hook and a fresh burst of peppy energy destined to have it wash up on a shore or get shuffled in a kickback playlist.
“Softest Touch” is Khalid’s follow-up to last year’s “Satellite” and “Skyline.” It, along with two aforementioned tracks, will appear on Khalid’s long-awaited third album, which was first slated to arrive in 2021 and then sometime in 2022.
It’s still being determined if Khalid is still going with the album title Everything is Changing. None of its previous singles, “New Normal,” “Present,” nor “Last Call,” will appear on the album.
Everything is Changing will serve as Khalid’s first proper album since 2019’s Free Spirit. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making it his first album to open atop the main albums chart.
Free Spirit spawned the hit single “Talk,” which topped the following Billboard charts: Pop Airplay, R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Hot R&B Songs, Adult R&B Airplay, R&B Streaming Songs, Rhythmic Airplay and R&B Digital Song Sales.
In late 2021, Khalid released Scenic Drive (The Tape). The R&B-inspired project included features from Alicia Keys, Lucky Daye, Ari Lennox, Majid Jordan and more.
Since then, Khalid has stayed in the mix. He linked with Keys, Marshmello, Joe Jonas and Dove Cameron for respective album, soundtrack and standalone tracks.
Khalid is gearing up for his first time on a stadium tour. He’s opening on select dates for Ed Sheeran’s + – = ÷ x Tour, which kicks off on May 6 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tickets are available at khalidofficial.com.
