PJ Morton stopped by The Daily Show on Tuesday night to promote his Grammy-nominated album Watch the Sun.

In the D. L. Hughley-hosted episode, Morton performed “Be Like Water” alongside spoken word poet Amir Sulaiman.

The original version of “Be Like Water” features Nas and Stevie Wonder. Morton spoke to Hughley about working with Wonder and Nas on the track in his interview, which can be watched below.

Watch the Sun was released in April 2022 and spawned the top ten single, “Please Don’t Walk Away.” The song, which features a video co-starring Dawn Richard, is nominated for Best R&B Song at the 65th Grammy Awards.

“‘Please Don’t Walk Away’ is in the spirit of when men were honest and willing to be vulnerable in music,” Morton shared.

“It came from a real place when I thought I was going to lose the love of my life. I just tapped into those feelings. And as it happens sometimes, something beautiful came from something tragic.”

Morton’s latest Best R&B Song nomination marks his fourth nod. He’s the only sole songwriter and performer in this year’s category. His previous nods here also listed him as the sole writer and artist.

Aside from his nods in the R&B field, Morton, nominated for the sixth consecutive year, is also up for Best Gospel Performance/Song (“The Better Benediction”).

The 65th Grammy Awards will air on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. It will also stream live and be on demand on Paramount+.

Watch the Sun ranked No. 8 on Rated R&B’s 30 Best Best R&B Albums of 2022 list. It was noted that the record is “full of promise.”

Additionally, Morton picked up two 2023 NAACP Image Awards nominations, including Outstanding Album (Watch the Sun) and Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (Traditional) [“Still Believe” featuring Alex Isley and Jill Scott].

Morton is on the lineup for a few festivals this spring, including the Las Vegas City Of Lights Jazz Rhythm & Blues Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Governors Ball Music Festival in Queens, New York.
