Alternative R&B singer-songwriter Khamari has unveiled his new single “Sycamore Tree.”
The introspective track, which interpolates D’Angelo‘s “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” examines the bloom and wither of a relationship. Throughout the song, Khamari contemplates whether to remain planted or uproot himself from the fading romance.
“It’s a tidy bed full of thorns of a rose / But I lie in it / Hoping there’s a chance,” he croons over lush instrumentation.
Speaking on “Sycamore Tree,” Khamari explains, “The song captures how something subtle can slowly take over your life—consuming you with desire until you lose your sense of direction. It’s deeply rooted, yet always just out of reach. I wanted the music to mirror that journey, starting soft and growing into something beautifully dramatic.”
“Sycamore Tree” follows “Head in a Jar,” which was released in May. Regarding the latter track, Khamari expressed, “‘Head in a Jar’ is a metaphor for being a part of someone’s life, but from a greater distance than you would like. This is mirrored in the lyrics, ‘If it’s the shelf or gone, then least I’ll be something to you’.”
Both songs will appear on the Bostonian’s upcoming sophomore album, slated to arrive this summer via Encore Recordings. The currently untitled project will follow Khamari’s debut album, A Brief Nirvana, released in 2023 via RCA Records. The album, which has garnered over 130 million cumulative streams, included the singles “Doctor, My Eyes,” “Tell Me,” “Drifting,” “Right My Wrongs,” “On My Way” and “These Four Walls.”
“This album is about the struggle of one growing into adulthood,” Khamari explained to Rated R&B about A Brief Nirvana. I was making music out of my grandfather’s attic previously when I was in Boston, before packing up my stuff, moving to Los Angeles, and trying to find myself socially out here — and dealing with my adult responsibilities.”
