The official theme song for ABC’s mixed-ish has arrived, and Mariah Carey never sounded more iconic.
“In the Mix,” which the songbird supreme penned and co-produced with Daniel Moore, has everything her Lambs would expect from a MC opening title recording in 2019 — her signature whistle register, nostalgic production and ‘Dem Kids (Monroe and Moroccan) singing backgrounds.
Carey seals the deal with the release of “In the Mix” with a companion video, which can be seen above. The visual stars Arica Himmell, who portrays a younger version of Tracee Ellis Ross’ black-ish character in the upcoming show.
While debuting the theme song at ABC’s Embrace Your Ish event on Tuesday night (Sept. 17), Carey shared why she’s “so thankful” a sitcom like mixed-ish is coming to television.
“To everyone that’s a fan of the show and of the topic and of the fact that we’ve evolved to a place where we can actually enlighten people, and without going into a whole long drawn out thing, it’s like representation is so important,” Carey told the crowd during a Q&A with series creator Kenya Barris.
She continued, “I actually cried when I watched the pilot. Obviously the humor is all there, but how displaced they are and it just made me feel like, that’s exactly how I felt. I didn’t grow up in a commune, but I might as well have.”
Mixed-ish, the spin-off to black-ish, is set to premiere on September 24 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
