Some couples are immune to the emotional twists and turns, causing many to believe that they enjoy this unhealthy relationship cycle. Rising Toronto singer Benita addresses this subject head-on in her latest song, “Toxic.”
The song has a soulful feel and approach, calling up old-school R&B sensibilities. Its flowing production, laden with a bass guitar, piano, and drums, kicks off the song at the right moment. Benita follows up with words about through the ropes with her man and the foot-dragging to let each other go no matter what.
“Even though we’re toxic / You can’t stand to see me leave / Even though we’re toxic / I’ll come back like you knew that I’d be / Nothing makes sense to me / Nothing makes sense to everybody / Nothing makes sense to me / Guess it’s meant to be / We’re meant to be,” sings Benita on the chorus.
“Toxic” is Benita’s third release of the year, following the songs “Pretty” and “Out of Here.” All three songs come behind last year’s dual singles: “Afterparty” and “My Bad.”
