Singer-songwriter Leon Thomas has returned with his new single “Love Jones,” featuring his EZMNY Records label head Ty Dolla $ign. The song, co-produced by Axl Folie and Ali Roots, features a co-writing credit from Camper (formerly known as DJ Camper).
On the song, Thomas digitizes his vocals, bearing a screwed sound for a tender cut that conveys his respect for a woman who’s got her own. Ty also tips his hat off to his lady for wearing Miss Independent’s crown.
According to Thomas, “Love Jones” has two meanings. “The first is about dating a girl in Hollywood who’s got it together. You fall in love with being inspired by someone on a level,” he explains. “The second is an ode to the city of Los Angeles. I wanted to find a way to tie in my love for the city I’ve been living in for the last 13 years and my love for the women that find their success here.”
“Love Jones” is Thomas’ second song released this year under Ty’s EZMNY Records, a joint venture with Motown Records. He previously made his official reintroduction with “X-Rated” featuring Benny The Butcher. Both tracks will appear on his forthcoming album.
Thomas hasn’t graced streaming platforms with solo material since 2018’s Genesis. The seven-track EP features guest appearances from Ella Varner, Buddy and Tayla Parx. The focus tracks were “PLW” and “Sunken Place.”
Earlier this year, Eric Bellinger recruited Thomas for his New Light: The Remixes EP. His appearance followed his contributions behind the boards for artists such as Ella Mai, Drake, 6LACK, and Ariana Grande, among others.
Ty recently collaborated with Kem on the title track to his freshly-released EP Full Circle. That pairing follows his “Friends” duet with Monica. It’s the latest single from the legendary diva’s impending album Trenches, coming this fall. “Friends” has a supporting music video, as well.
Outside of Ty’s recent high-profile collaborations, he last released his album Featuring Ty Dolla $ign in October 2020 via Atlantic Records. In August 2021, he teamed up with R&B duo dvsn to release a one-off joint mixtape titled Cheers to the Best Memories. After that, he lent his talents to Hitmaka and Queen Naija’s single “Quickie.”
