Lucky Daye has already cemented himself as an R&B mainstay. Before diving into his new album, Algorithm, let’s reflect on his output so far.
The Grammy-winning singer, who introduced himself with 2019’s Painted, has proven that he knows how to make R&B jams that stick. His sophomore LP, Candydrip, which was ranked No. 1 on Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of 2022 list, reaffirmed his position in the R&B lane.
But to know Lucky Daye is to know that he’s never really been the one to box himself in. His past collaborations with Kaytranada (“Look Easy“), SG Lewis (“Feed The Fire“), Mark Ronson (“Too Much“), and even his writing contribution to Beyoncé’s “Alien Superstar” are just a few instances of him flexing his pen beyond familiar territory.
On Daye’s third album, Algorithm, the New Orleans native pushes the sonic envelope with his longtime collaborator and producer D’Mile.
“Algorithm is the continued exploration of my sound, leaning into more futuristic and alternative sounds,” explains Daye. “Whenever I create with D’Mile and J. Kercy, we create magic, so I hope the fans love this project as much as I do.”
Algorithm was preceded by the singles “That’s You,” “HERicane” and “Soft.” The album includes two special guests: Teddy Swims, who appears on “Blame,” and RAYE (“Paralyzed).”
On Algorithm, Daye finds an open playing field to expand his creative horizons with alt-rock-leaning sounds. He experiments more with distorted vocal effects, gritty guitars and gut-punching drums.
Daye doesn’t abandon his R&B roots on Algorithm; instead, he reimagines the rhythmic backdrop for tunes about love (“That’s You“), longing (“Pin”), infatuation (“Algorithm”), shortcomings (“Blame”), heartbreak (“Lemonade”), and weed (“Mary”).
“Stacy, Traci, Faith and Gracey Dominique, Tamika, Amy Aquafina, Rosaline but nothing ever hit like Mary,” he sings in the latter 420 anthem.
Algorithm includes additional production contributions from Bruno Mars, Deputy, Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, Livvy Bennett, Michael B. Hunter, Heavy Mellow, and The Monsterz.
On July 11, Daye will kick off his headlining Algorithm Tour in San Fransisco with special guest Fana Hues.
They will make additional stops in Portland, Denver, Chicago, Toronto, New Orleans, and more before concluding Aug. 28 in Los Angeles.
