Grammy-winning singer Muni Long has unleashed her second album, Revenge, via Def Jam Recordings.
Regarding her album, Long states, “I’m trying to solidify myself as an R&B giant, and I’m confident enough to say it because I know we made some quality music.”
She adds, “When you hear Revenge, I want you to feel like I did when I heard Maxwell’s first album. I hope my music can be a little bit of medicine. I promise you’ll feel better.”
The 14-track set includes her chart-topping hits “Made For Me” and “Make Me Forget,” as well as the third single, “Ruined Me.”
Revenge features a guest appearance from rising rapper GloRilla, who is featured on the standout “Leave My Baby Tonight.”
On the track, which samples Funk Inc.’s “Kool Is Back” by way of 112‘s “Come See Me,” Long is fed up with her man and is ready to pack her bags. As much as his actions aggravate her, there’s a calmness in her vocals that suggests she would rather for him to get his act together so they can continue on.
“You know you my baby / Just when I think maybe / You finally get it / You start acting all strangely / It’s really irking me it’s making me want to leave,” she sings.
GloRilla brings her fiery energy with hard-hitting bars like, “You lost a It girl, do that s**t make you a clown or what? / Time is money you ain’t got it / Boy your time is up.” Then, she switches it up with a surprisingly soft vocal delivery. GloRilla sings, “You ain’t never sorry until you get caught / Get to stuttin’ even harder when I’m pissed off / You had the ball in your possession but you kicked off,” before growling, “Stupid ass n***a.”
When asked about enlisting GloRilla, Long exclusively tells Rated R&B, “I love Glo; I think she’s super funny, and her punchlines make me laugh. Just thinking of female artists on the rise that I can collaborate with, I really love her perspective. She’s feminine but also real. She raps about more than sex and her body. She was a natural fit for me.”
Long adds, “When I heard her verse, I was blown away because it was super catchy, but she was also singing. Since I got the record a year ago, I’ve been crossing my fingers that she wouldn’t give anybody a record singing, and she hasn’t. I’m the first!”
Revenge includes production by Tricky Stewart, Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, Tee Romano, OG Parker, Tommy Brown, Yonatan Watts, and more.
Revenge is the follow-up to Long’s 2022 debut LP, Public Displays of Affection: The Album. The project included her Grammy-winning hit “Hrs & Hrs,” plus “Time Machine,” “Ain’t Easy,” “Another,” “No R&B” featuring Ann Marie and “Baby Boo” featuring Saweetie.
“I’ve spent so many hours crafting this, putting my heart and soul into every track,” Long said of Public Displays of Affection. “I want to give you all more of what you love and deserve. These songs, these stories, and these experiences are fueled by love and affection; that of which I have for all of you.”
Long performed several songs from her debut album, plus previewed songs from Revenge as a special guest on Chris Brown‘s 11:11 Tour. The sold-out summer trek wrapped up in early August in Los Angeles.
