Leon Thomas has enlisted Victoria Monét for the official remix of his single, “Breaking Point.”
Most of the overdriven guitar-backed track remains intact, as Thomas keeps many of his vocal parts.
Monét expresses her melancholic perspective on the unpredictable nature of love. “Like fire on an ocean floor, I don’t understand how we’re here / We could be crashing to ground and somehow still reach the ceiling / We’re boiling til the water drifts away until we’re feeling / Burn out / We know that we are past the point of healing,” she vocalizes.
In an interview with Rated R&B during that same month, Thomas openly discussed the somber track and revealed that his own personal experiences in a relationship inspired it.
“I recently went through a breakup and felt like I needed a song that spoke to some of the emotions and the feelings that I was going through,” Thomas explained to Rated R&B.
He continued, “We kind of put something together that was reminiscent of D’Angelo and some of the early 2000s neo-soul that I respect and love. There’s so many different aspects of this song lyrically that kind of play into the ‘why’ behind the production style that I used for it. I needed people to really feel what my heart was going through in this tug-of-war moment.”
Both versions will appear on Thomas’ upcoming debut album, Electric Dusk, slated to arrive in August via EZMNY Records / Motown Records.
Speaking of Ty Dolla $ign, Thomas will support Electric Dusk on his label head’s More Motion Less Emotion Tour. The North American trek begins Sept. 15 in San Diego, California.
Monét is readying the release of her album Jaguar II. The album, out Aug. 25 via RCA Records, marks the second and final installment in her Jaguar series following the 2020 release.
The latter track, which samples rapper Chalie Boy’s 2009 track “I Look Good,” has proved her best on the charts, peaking at No. 16 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart.
